Victorious Virgin: a service on Joan of Arc

Me on my 40th by Jehanne’s church in Rouen on the site on which she died

I am not afraid. I was born for this

Jeheanne la Pucelle

Welcome to our May service on one of our best known warrior women ever!

It was improvised, so there’s no text today. It focusses on what Joan says to us now – literally.

There are sword sounds at the start, my music “Battle Weary” at the end (with authentic rain sound), and the filling is quite a lot of talking, so feel free to pause.

Here is one thing you hear, two things you won’t, and a correction:

My pledge for you, written especially:

Virginity was defined recently by Elayne Kalila Doughty as wholeness in of oneself; it’t not about if you’ve a lover or partner, but that you are complete without and that you are not defined by the institutional contract of marriage.

Joan has a link with our local famous lady warrior – Boudicca, who was also a vision-seeing deeply spiritual lady who routed invaders. Be sure that Boadicea will be getting a service sometime!

Correction: I know that Joan lived 600 years ago (1412-1431) – I just said the wrong number!

Please do get in touch if you’re listening. I’d love to meet you. Would you like to meet, at least virtually, with others? My email is betweenthestools@hotmail.co.uk

Lastly, a prayer for the Joan of Arc wound:

Dear Lord, Mother God, we give thanks for the life of Joan. Be with us if we feel afraid that standing in our truth, standing our ground, following you and the path you have for us will end in fearful loss; if we are asked to choose between love of You and experiencing human love. Show us that we are loved, even and especially if we feel we are not. Show us that “your yoke is easy and your burden light” and that you do not impose a path on us. Give us strength and support; and thank you that like Joan, we are never alone, for you and the angels are ever with us. Comfort us if we fear that our gifts will be rejected, misunderstood, or even that we’ll be condemned and maligned if we use them. Thank you for these new times where we can shine our lights more freely and fully, where gifts like Joan’s are being understood and cherished again; where a new style of leadership, the divine feminine, is bursting fourth. Protect us and show us the wonder of your miracles, that our oppressors may depart without violence, and we all can enjoy a free world henceforth. We say this in the name of Joan’s God – and ours. Amen
